Areas of expertise:

Welcome Cinema Kids is an ongoing grassroots project, set up and run by volunteers who previously spent a year setting up and running an education and play space for children in the Calais ‘Jungle’ refugee camp. We have been providing a regular service to asylum seeking and refugee families in Cardiff for the past year, since May 2017. We aim to encourage social support, networking and to combat isolation through: signposting people to relevant services, enabling integration with the existing local community and creating safe, child friendly spaces.

Accommodation provided for newly arrived asylum seekers have no child friendly spaces at a time when children can’t yet access school. Welcome Cinema Kids’ purpose is to alleviate some of the pressure this creates for children and families.

Each week a family friendly film is shown with popcorn, pizza and fruit. Between 30 and 60 people from the refugee, asylum seeking and local communities attend for free each week. Children can take part in a colouring competition to choose the next weeks film.

Our main audience are people who have recently arrived in the UK and who haven’t yet accessed services in the local area. We also welcome refugees who have leave or right to remain status, as well as any other families from the local community. This gives newly arrived people a chance to meet other people who share similar experiences, a language, or a culture. People are often signposted to other services and some parents who come weekly are active in sharing information with newcomers. Other service providers bring clients to the cinema.
