Job Title: Designer/Researcher for Clwstwr Creadigol and PDR Location: Llandaff, Cardiff Salary: £33,518 - £37,706 

Role Summary: 

PDR (The International Centre for Design and Research) is a leading European multidisciplinary design and development research centre. Combining both an award winning consultancy and a highly rated research function. 

PDR works closely with industry to provide advice, expertise and consultancy on the full spectrum of activities and processes required to bring new product opportunities to market efficiently and effectively. 

PDR is one partner within a multi-million pound AHRC funded project bringing together Universities and the creative industries within South Wales to form a ‘Creative Cluster’ around the screen industries and their supply chain. The cluster includes over 60 organisations, including universities, national public and private Screen Organisations (BBC, ITV, S4C, Ffilm Cymru etc) through to microbusinesses and freelancers within post-production, animation and other related screen services. 

This role will also be responsible for the design and management of the engagement mechanism between the project stakeholders over the first 12 months. The role will then go on to be responsible for the development of collaborative design projects to support the innovative business opportunities identified by project stakeholders. Two main areas for innovation have been identified within the cluster: 

1) Screen Innovation System 

• Strengthening the cluster’s screen infrastructure 

• Innovation to broaden and develop the value if IP in screen production 

• The Short to medium-form content gap 

2) News Innovation Lab 

• Developing new models and forms of news and public affairs and content delivery designed to reach and engage 16-35 year olds 

• Creating new products/services to strengthen the business models for local news.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 

To lead and deliver user-centred/service design approach to planning and facilitating the engagement of project partners with relevant Microbusinesses and freelancers. 

1. To lead research with project stakeholders to identify their needs and priorities in engaging with the Creative Cluster, utilising design research approaches. 

2. Analyse research findings and translate into designs for engagement mechanisms for project stakeholders, this could take a wide variety of forms and will be defined by research outputs. 

3. Meeting project partners typically at senior management level, to discuss, negotiate and identify their needs and to interpret and translate these into project actions. 

4. Act as the primary point of contact between PDR and project partners, developing proposals to identify the application of PDR’s user-centred expertise to innovative screen & media industry projects. 

5. Lead the development of user-centred design project plans, identifying appropriate research and design methods for innovation projects identified within Creative Clusters project. 

6. Effectively manage any issues which may affect the achievement of the project objectives. This includes contributing to the effective management of the Clwstwr and wider UCD portfolio (where appropriate) and ensuring project activities are informed by emerging good practice. 

7. To assist and contribute to the team’s identification of research objectives and to assist in the dissemination of research findings by both contributing to and leading conference, journal and other publications.
